What is Seborrheic Dermatitis?
Seborrheic dermatitis is a relatively common skin condition that causes redness, scaly patches, and dandruff. It mostly affects the scalp, but can also develop in other oily areas of the body, such as the face, in and around the ears, upper chest, or back.
Though the exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis isn’t clear, doctors believe there are two main factors that can contribute to the development of the condition. The first factor is an over-production of oil. An excess amount of oil in the skin might act as an irritant, causing the skin to become red and greasy. The second contributing factor is malassezia, a type of fungus that is naturally found in the skin’s oils. It can sometimes grow abnormally, causing the skin to secrete more oil than usual. The increased production of oil can then lead to seborrheic dermatitis.
Seborrheic dermatitis is a long-term skin condition that will require ongoing treatment to manage it. However, with a good skin care routine and along with recognizing and avoiding certain triggers can help you manage the condition effectively. The condition doesn’t lead to any serious medical conditions or other complications.
Symptoms
The symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis are often caused by various factors, including stress, or heavy use of alcohol. The types of symptoms that develop can vary from person to person.
Seborrheic dermatitis has a distinct appearance and set of symptoms:
- Skin develops scaly patches that flake off, resulting in dandruff
- Skin in the affected area tends to be greasy and oily
- Skin in the affected area may become red and irritable
- Hair loss may occur in the affected area
Some of the symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis are similar to those of other skin conditions, including psoriasis. To make an accurate diagnosis, your doctor or trichologist will perform a physical examination and carefully inspect the affected areas.
Other factors that are thought to increase risk of seborrheic dermatitis include:
- Stress
- Poor hygiene care
- Prolonged exposure to pollutants
- Presence of other skin issues, such as acne
- Use of unsuitable products, particularly those containing alcohol
- Certain medical conditions, such as a stroke, HIV, or Parkinson’s disease
Seborrheic dermatitis is a long-term condition, when you may go through extended periods where there are little to no symptoms or may also experience flare-ups, where symptoms could become more severe.
Over time, you can find a scalp care routine that works for you and minimizes the impact of the condition. Learning to recognize and avoid certain triggers will also help you manage seborrheic dermatitis effectively.
Before you lose hope or getting the inappropriate scalp care treatment that may worsen the condition, it’s best to get a hair n scalp analysis to determine the underlying factors and choosing an appropriate treatment.
