Diet plays an important role for our overall well-being and health. Our bodies gets most of its necessary building blocks from our dietary habits. The same goes for our hair if we want to achieve and maintain healthy hair.

Breakfast; Kickstarting Your Day

Are you skipping your breakfast frequently due to your busy schedule?

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. The first meal of the day gives our hair a nutritional energy boost to take on the day ahead. It also plays a major role in boosting hair follicles growth.

Since our hair is made primarily of protein, having a high protein breakfast can aid in keratin production, which in turn keeps our hair and nails healthy.

So make time for breakfast and go for a balanced one rich in protein and complex carbohydrates!

Hydration

Water is the essence of life. Living in this hot humid island and scuttling between the outdoors and air-conditioned rooms can leave us dehydrated quickly.

Like the other cells in our bodies, our scalp and hair needs H2O to function properly and healthily.

Sugar & Artificial Sweetener

Got a sweet tooth? Some research has shown that sugar, especially artificial ones, is linked to hair loss conditions like androgenic alopecia.

Excessive sugar consumption can disrupt the chemicals responsible for hair growth and also cause hormone imbalances such as dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that is linked to hair loss. High sugar levels causes inflammation and it could also lead to glycation where the protein structure in our hair follicles become damaged over time.

Salt

Try to control your salt intake; too much salt in your diet could damage your hair! Excessive salt intake will lead to sodium to build up and develop around the hair follicles, which will then affect the circulation and prevent the follicles getting the essential nutrients.

The recommended daily intake for the average adult per day is 2,300 mg, and 1,500 mg for those over the age of 50. Soft drinks and tidbits are some of the common culprits high in sodium.
