Dealing with Split Ends

Dealing with Split Ends

Split ends aren’t fun though it’s pretty common. Split ends can happen to any of us sometimes, even if we take the precautionary steps like trimming our hair every 6 to 10 weeks or moisturizing and shielding it from the sun. Our hair deals with plenty of wear and tear regularly that will inevitably result in breakages.

What are Split Ends and Why it Happens

Split ends is, as the term suggests, the splitting of the hair shaft. It typically occur towards the end of the strand. Split ends are also referred to as trichoptilosis.

A common misperception is that split ends are nothing more than just an annoyance. But split ends are actually damaged hair and the split could eventually travel up the strand of hair causing more damage. That’s why it’s important to trim our hair regularly to remove the split ends.

Split ends happen when the ends of our hair becomes dry and brittle, usually as a result from frequent heat treatments such as straightening or perming. Chemical damage from the treatments and products used can also lead to damaged brittle hair and split ends. Deficiency in certain nutrients is also another common factor.

How to Manage Split Ends

Split ends can happen to any of us, though some of us might be more prone to having split ends. The best way to manage them is probably by trimming if you spot them early. Prevention is always better and your hair will thank you for avoiding harsh chemicals and excessive heat treatments.

A proper hair care regime also plays a key role in preventing split ends. Good shampooing and conditioning habit removes the toxins and moisturizes the hair. Towel-drying your hair instead of rubbing it vigorously can also prevent tangled and damaged hair. Brushing your hair (gently) helps to untangle your hair and also distribute the hair’s natural oils evenly all the way to the ends.

There are also some essential nutrients that can restore the strength and vitality in your hair. Here are some of the nutrients for healthier hair:

Zinc

Zinc deficiency can lead to an itchy scalp, hair loss and also lay down the conditions for split ends to appear. Food such as oysters, eggs and walnuts are great sources of zinc.

Omega-3s

Omega-3 fatty acid is a healthy fatty acid that moisturizes and keep our hair shiny. It also improves the elasticity of the hair. Some research has also shown it to boost hair growth. Salmons and pumpkin seeds are rich in omega-3s.

Protein

Protein is the building block for healthy hair and its main component – keratin. Keratin is a fibrous protein that makes up the structural block of our hair, keeping it elastic and healthy.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is essential in sealing in the scalp’s natural oils and also support the lipid membranes, which keeps your hair from drying and becoming brittle. Avocados, sunflower seeds and almonds are excellent sources.

B-Complex Vitamins

This family of vitamins play a key role in supporting healthy strong hair growth. Vitamin B1 (thiamine) combats brittle hair effectively while Vitamin B7 (biotin) helps improve the keratin infrastructure. Foods such as almonds, avocados, eggs, raw nuts and seeds, and leafy greens provide the necessary vitamins.
